“Many Drops” in online micro-concert

“Many Drops” was included last month in IMAGINARY CONCERTS, an online micro concert with sound-art miniatures focusing on water and climate change consequences. The performance took place on March 22, 2014 at 5:00pm (Montreal time) as part of “3WDS14 – WaterWheel World Water Day Symposium”. The curator and host at Concordia University was Ricardo Dal Farra.

“Many Drops” is a one minute work I wrote for “art! ⋈ climate”, a contest organized by CEIARTE-UNTREF in collaboration with the Red Cross/Red Crescent Climate Centre.

“November”: a New York minute for 60×60

My new one minute piece, called “November” has been a given a place in the 60×60 surround sound presentation commissioned by Vox Novus and Harvestworks Digital Artworks Media Center in New York City.

60×60 is a one-hour-long show made by sequencing 60 pre-recorded pieces by 60 different composers, each piece a minute in length or shorter. This particular version will be a 5.1 surround sound mix to be premiered at Harvestworks multichannel TEAMLab listening room on May 16th at 7:00 pm EST.

“November” is a 4 channel piece created using my Audio SprayGun software written in SuperCollider. I will put a stereo reduction online soon.

Blogging

Most of my time these days is given over to writing music for my PhD rather than selling albums on CD, so I’ve decided to change the function of this website somewhat.

From now on, I plan to use the site to document both work in progress and earlier work which stand as precursors to my current efforts. This will take the form of blog posts, audio links and software tools available for download. The aim is to share my ideas with whoever’s interested.

The underlying theme of the work continues to be developing of generative music software (more often than not featuring fuzzy-probabilistic hybrids) and then writing music with it. This includes some SuperCollider work to create and spatialise large sound event-groups from a few samples; and some pieces for instrument (flute and hexaphonic guitar so far) and computer using IRCAM Mubu software.

more posts on the story so far coming soon…

Flute Sketch

Here is the preliminary sketch I made for the flute/electronics piece which is to be played at INTER/actions in Bangor next month. The flute part was generously donated by Sean Goldthorpe and the computer part makes extensive use of the IRCAM Mubu multibuffer.

INTER/Actions

A new piece of mine for Flute and Electronics has been selected for workshopping (if that’s a word) at the INTER/Actions mini-festival and symposium to be held at Bangor University on the 15th /16th March. The flute will be played by Richard Craig and the workshop will be led by composer and sound artist Gilbert Nouno (IRCAM). The workshop will also feature pieces by James Joslin and Manuella Blackburn.

My most recent acousmatic piece, “Only Now” will have its premiere as part of the Electroacoustic Wales Concert in Powis Hall, Bangor University on Thursday 7th November at 8:00. The piece features some of my large-scale “sound-groups” realised in Supercollider and will be played back over a 32 speaker surround system.
